There is a certain satisfaction in seeing an EMI disappear from your monthly expenses. If you have received a bonus, built up enough savings, or simply want to become debt-free sooner, you may consider closing your personal loan before its scheduled tenure.
This is called personal loan foreclosure. However, paying off the loan early is not just transferring the outstanding amount. You need to check the applicable charges, request the correct foreclosure amount, and collect proof that the loan has been formally closed.
Personal loan foreclosure means paying the entire outstanding loan amount before the original repayment tenure ends. Once the lender receives the required amount, the loan account is closed, and you no longer need to pay the remaining EMIs.
Foreclosure is different from part payment. With part payment, you pay only a portion of the outstanding principal and continue repaying the remaining loan through EMIs.
Foreclosure charges are fees that a lender may levy when you repay your personal loan before the scheduled tenure. Generally, foreclosure charges are between 2% and 5% of the outstanding principal amount. However, these charges do not apply uniformly to every loan.
Under the RBI's applicable framework, qualifying floating-rate loans given to individuals for non-business purposes cannot carry prepayment charges. The directions apply to loans sanctioned or renewed on or after January 1, 2026. The protection covers both full and partial prepayment.
For loans outside the specified categories, applicable foreclosure charges may still be levied according to the lender's policy and loan terms.
| Loan Situation | Foreclosure Charge |
| Qualifying floating-rate loan to an individual for non-business use | No charge under applicable RBI rules |
| Fixed-rate personal loan | May apply as per the lender's terms |
| Loan outside the specified RBI categories | May apply as per applicable terms |
Foreclosing a personal loan generally involves the following steps:
Review your loan agreement to understand whether foreclosure charges or other conditions apply. Also check the outstanding principal and remaining tenure.
Contact your lender and ask for a foreclosure statement or foreclosure quote. It should specify the amount you need to pay to settle the loan, including any applicable charges.
Pay the stated foreclosure amount through the payment method permitted by your lender. Keep the payment receipt or transaction confirmation for your records.
After the payment is processed, check with the lender that the loan account has been fully settled and no amount remains outstanding.
Ask the lender for the relevant loan closure document, such as a foreclosure certificate, loan closure certificate, NOC or no-dues certificate.
A personal loan foreclosure certificate is a document confirming that you have repaid the outstanding loan amount and that the lender has closed the loan account. Depending on the lender, it may also be referred to as a loan closure certificate, NOC or no-dues certificate.
The document serves as proof that the loan has been settled. Keep it safely along with the final payment receipt and other loan records, as you may need these documents later to establish that there are no outstanding dues.
Did you know that for loans where original movable or immovable property documents are held as security, RBI requires regulated entities to release them within 30 days after full repayment or settlement, subject to the applicable framework?
Lenders may use different names for documents issued after loan closure. A foreclosure or loan closure certificate generally confirms repayment and closure, while an NOC indicates that the lender has no objection or outstanding claim relating to the closed loan.
The exact document issued can vary, so check with your lender after making the final payment.
Once the payment has been made, a few final checks can help ensure that the closure is properly recorded:

Foreclosure can reduce future interest and remove an EMI, but paying off a loan early is not automatically the best financial decision. Consider both the savings and what happens to your available cash.
| Foreclosure May Make Sense If | Think Twice If |
| You have sufficient surplus funds after keeping an emergency reserve. | It would consume most of your available savings. |
| You can save a meaningful amount of future interest. | The loan is already close to maturity. |
| Applicable foreclosure charges are low or zero. | Charges significantly reduce the potential savings. |
| You want to eliminate the EMI. | You have more expensive debt to repay first. |
Take control of your finances with JioFinance’s smart tools and expert guidance, designed to help you make more informed money decisions.
Personal loan foreclosure can help you become debt-free sooner, reduce future interest and free up your monthly income. But before making the final payment, compare the foreclosure amount with the interest you would otherwise pay and check all applicable charges. From choosing a suitable loan to assessing its overall cost, JioFinance makes financial decisions more informed and convenient.
