Penalty for late ITR filing

What happens if you miss the ITR deadline?

Missed the deadline? You can still file your ITR

The best practice is to file your ITR within the due date. Still, if you miss the deadline, the belated due date for ITR filing is 31st December of the assessment year. For AY 2026-27, it is 31st December 2026.

If you fail to file ITR even by 31st December, you still have 4 years' time from the last date of the assessment year (31st December). For AY 2026-27, it will be 31st March 2031. However, you will have to bear the penalties.

How to correct errors in ITR filing?

Filing ITR requires careful attention. Yet, sometimes errors may occur. You need not worry, though, because the Income Tax Department lets you correct the errors committed in ITR filing. For this, updated ITR and revised ITR have to be filed. Here are the details:

Revised ITR

In the revised ITR, you can correct the errors committed in the original income tax return.

  • The due date for the revised ITR for AY 2026-27 is 31st March 2027.
  • For instance, suppose you filed ITR within the deadline. On 5th August 2026, you realised that you didn't claim certain deductions. In that case, you can file a revised ITR by 31st March 2027 with correct details.

Updated ITR

An updated ITR is filed when you forget to submit the revised ITR by 31st March.

  • The due date for the updated ITR for FY 2026-27 is 31st March 2031 (four years from the assessment year's last date)
  • Imagine this, on 10th April 2027, you realised that you didn't claim certain deductions in the ITR. However, now the due date for the revised ITR for AY 2026-27 has passed. So, now you need to file an updated ITR by 31st March 2032.
