Can You Pay Income Tax With a Credit Card?

Paying income tax is rarely anyone’s favourite financial task. But when a large tax bill comes due, the bigger question can be how to pay it without disturbing your cash flow. This is where a credit card may seem like a reliable option. It can give you some extra time before the amount has to be paid from your bank account.

However, this convenience comes with a few conditions. Before using your credit card for tax payments, it is important to understand the available payment route, additional charges, and the impact on your card bill.

Can You Pay Income Tax With a Credit Card?

Yes. The Income Tax Department allows taxpayers to pay direct taxes through a credit card using the “Payment Gateway” option on the e-Filing portal.

  1. The payment gateway also supports debit cards, net banking and UPI.
  2. A challan with a Challan Reference Number (CRN) is required for making the tax payment through the e-Pay Tax service.
  3. The option can be used for applicable tax payments, including advance tax and self-assessment tax, depending on the payment category selected.

Will You Be Charged Extra for Paying Income Tax With a Credit Card?

Possibly, yes. The Income Tax Department itself does not charge a payment gateway fee. However, the bank or payment gateway may levy a transaction or convenience fee, and this is added to the tax amount. The exact charge depends on the payment gateway and card used.

For example, the current Income Tax Department payment-gateway schedule shows credit card charges such as 0.80%, 0.85%, 0.90% or 1% for different gateways, with 18% GST applicable to the stated charges. Always check the applicable fee displayed before confirming payment.

Why Should You Consider Paying Income Tax With Your Credit Card?

A credit card does not reduce your tax liability, but it can offer some practical advantages in certain situations.

1. Manage Short-Term Cash Flow

If your tax payment is due before your salary, business receipts or another expected inflow, a credit card can provide temporary payment flexibility.

2. Avoid Immediate Bank-Account Outflow

The tax amount is charged to the credit card rather than being deducted directly from your savings account.

3. Convenient Online Payment

The entire transaction can be completed online through the e-Filing portal and an authorised payment gateway.

4. Possible Card Rewards

Some credit cards may offer rewards on tax-related transactions. Check the reward exclusions before assuming that a tax payment will earn points or cashback.

How Can You Pay Income Tax With a Credit Card?

The Income Tax Department provides a straightforward online process.

Step 1: Open the Income Tax E-Filing Portal

Visit the official Income Tax e-Filing portal and access the e-Pay Tax facility. You can use the service either before logging in or after logging into your account.

Step 2: Start a New Payment

After logging in, go to e-File, then e-Pay Tax and select New Payment. Choose the relevant tax payment category.

Step 3: Enter the Tax Details

Select the applicable tax year, payment type and other required details. Enter the tax breakup carefully and review the amount before proceeding. The portal will generate a unique CRN for the payment.

Step 4: Select Payment Gateway

Choose “Payment Gateway” as the payment mode. This option allows payment through credit card, debit card, net banking or UPI, subject to the options available through the selected gateway.

Step 5: Choose Credit Card

Review the displayed transaction charges and select the credit card option. You will then be redirected to the selected payment gateway to enter your card details and complete authentication.

Step 6: Save the Challan Receipt

After successful payment, check the payment status and save the challan receipt. You will find payment details and the challan receipt under the “Payment History” section.

Be Mindful About These Things Before Paying

A credit card can make the payment convenient, but a few checks can prevent unnecessary costs or mistakes.

  1. Look at the transaction charge before clicking the final payment button. The fee is over and above the tax amount.
  2. A large tax payment can use a significant portion of your card limit and affect your available credit.
  3. Some card issuers may have specific reward or transaction rules for government payments.
  4. A tax payment may give you short-term flexibility, but carrying an unpaid credit card balance can result in finance charges.
  5. Check your PAN, tax year, payment category and amount before making the payment.
  6. Save the challan and transaction confirmation until the payment is properly reflected in your tax records.
  7. If the card is debited but the CRN does not immediately show as paid, ensure you check the status again after some time before taking further action.

The Bottom Line

Paying income tax with a credit card can be useful when you need short-term payment flexibility, but it is important to look beyond the convenience. JioFinance lets you manage your everyday financial needs; you can also explore UPI, banking and other money-management features all in one place.
